I’m only writing this review because I know Castroville is a booming town that has many families moving in. I would not recommend Van Winkle as anyone’s primary. He’s made some extremely unprofessional comments not to mention he often undermines my family’s intelligence.
He will often accept calls from my grandfathers neighbors as truth to his health and tries to allow that information as valid for patient assessment. When my grandfather is hospitalized he often disagrees with the specialist & tries to mansplain to us how a primary physician is more likely correct over a specialist. Unfortunately, my grandfather has been hospitalized the two most recent “holidays” and now he’s accusing my family of purposefully feeding/giving my grandfather something so he’s hospitalized during the holidays. Not sure if this was supposed to be comedic but as a family of homebodies I can guarantee you we would rather be home hanging out all together as a family, not the hospital.

I've been seeing Dr. Van Winkle literally since before I was born. He has a great (dry) sense of humor and truly cares about his patients. Dr. Nguyen is the same way. People who complain about the wait times don't understand that this is a small town and these doctors actually take time to discuss and visit with their patients. They won't prescribe medicine unless you need it and they're more than willing to work with you if you have income issues. Their office staff are all very friendly and kind.

I have been a patient at this location for 20 years now and today I cancelled my patient file. I have been calling since 8:36 AM to ask if I needed to come back in to refill my antibiotics or if I could just have them refilled. I left a voicemail when I first called. I was not called back. I called again at 11:12 AM and was told they would relay my message. I was still not called back. I just called again at 3 PM to be told that I cannot have my prescription refilled that I have to go in. I asked 7 hours ago so that I could make accommodations because I feel terrible. I am so displeased and disappointed with the service of the front desk team every time I go in. I’d rather pay extra money to be seen by the urgent care down the street that actually cares about the time and well being of their patients. The young lady that I spoke to last was completely out of line when I asked to cancel my file. I hope Dr. Van Winkle knows who he has at the front is awful and he just lost a ton of money because of her. The nurse practitioner on the other hand is wonderful and I wish I was able to speak to her when I first call 7 HOURS ago.

I've been seeing Dr. Van Winkle for 30 years, I'm 51. It's true that the wait times can be excessively long, but that's because Dr. Van Winkle doesnt turn anyone away. I have never called at any time or any day and been told I couldn't see the doctor. He sees my husband for diabetes and always takes the time to explain all his lab results and different options besides medicine to improve his health.
